How to stop being quoted one price on the phone for auto insurance, and being hit with a higher price when you go to buy it.
Always ask if they charge a broker fee or if there are any other fees you should know about. Some insurance agents will quote without fees and tack it on later.
Give them the vehicle identification number(s) for all vehicles you want a quote for.
Even if they say they don't need it, give it to them anyway. Some agents
will say the rate changed when you go to buy your auto insurance
because they inadvertently gave the quote on the phone using the default
vehicle identification number in the rating program. (You can find the
vehicle identification number on your registration or title of your
vehicle(s).
Make sure you tell them about any tickets or accidents
you have on your driving record, no matter how minor the ticket or
whether the accident was deemed your fault or not. If you're not
sure what's on your driving record, get a copy from the D.M.V. Some
agents will raise their fee if they find the slightest discrepancy on
your record, and tell you the rate when up because of your driving
record even if it didn't! Also if the accident was deemed not your
fault, make sure you bring proof that it wasn't in the form of a police
report etc.
Make sure you tell them how many miles you drive one way
to work, if you're married or single, if your vehicle is altered in any
way (like being lowered or has after market alterations), and also tell
them if you use your vehicle commercially, (like for pizza or newspaper
delivery, or your a house painter etc.)
Make sure you get a quote for exactly the coverage you are looking for.
Just because the agent says it's a quote for full coverage, doesn't
mean it includes uninsured motorist etc. Also make sure they are quoting
with the deductibles that you want. Many will quote $1,000 deductibles
and not tell you until you are sitting in front of them, and your
finance company may not allow that high of a deductible. You may not
want it either. Remember, if you have $1,000 deductibles, that's how
much you will have to pay in the event of an accident that is deemed to
be your fault.
Have them email you the quote they give you on the phone,
with full details, including coverage's and fees, saying they guarantee
that as long as the information you gave them on the phone stays the
same, the rate will stay the same when you come to buy your auto
insurance. If they're not willing to do that, find someone else.
